There is only one cancer care facility in Canada where you will find an integration of conventional healing modalities with alternative and complementary practitioners, and it is located in Vancouver.
The Centre for Integrated Healing is a non-profit society founded in 1977, with five medical doctors who work alongside alternative and complementary practitioners including: Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctors, Naturopaths, Homeopaths, a Registered Nutritionist, Massage Therapists and Bodyworkers. The Centre is funded by the B.C. Medical Services Plan, private foundations and corporate and personal donations.
Co-founders of the Centre are Dr. Roger Rogers and Dr. Hal Gunn, both of whom earned their M.D. degrees at the University of British Columbia. In 2001 Dr. Rogers received the Order of British Columbia, the highest honour awarded by the provincial government, as an “alternative cancer therapy pioneer.” Dr. Gunn currently teaches “Wellness and the Art of Healing” at UBC.
“When one thinks about complementary medicine, it is not uncommon to think about vitamins, supplements, support groups, yoga or meditation,” Dr. Gunn said. “These are important aspects, but complementary medicine is much more than its individual components. Complementary care is, at its essence, about empowering the individual to optimally engage their mind, body and spirit in the process of healing.”
The Centre offers a two-day Introductory Program providing instruction on healthful nutrition, visualization, meditation, vitamins & supplements and a wide number of healing therapies. Dates for up-coming programs are October 16 & 17 and November 13 & 14. For more information visit www.healing.bc.ca or call (604) 734-7125.
