DAYLIGHT, MOONLIGHT –
Kitaro Live in Yakushiji
Reviewed by Kushad Watsan
The Yakushiji temple dates back to at least 600 A.D. in Nara, Japan, the first capital of the Shoguns. In a special event for world peace, Kitaro and his ensemble gathered beneath a brilliant full moon in the first concert ever at Yakushiji. The magic of three evening concerts is captured faithfully in this two CD set that explores simple temple chimes, bells, water sounds and chants from the monks, blended with traditional shakuhachi flute, stringed koto, drum and bamboo sticks, as well as piano, violin and the many effects and moods of the synthesizer for which Kitaro is famous. Prepare to go on twelve interesting journeys. The tracks range from 8 to15 minutes long, with moods from meditative and tonal to grand, orchestral, mysterious and sweet melodic. Overall, it’s a relaxing yet stimulating treat to enjoy after a hectic day.
