Science Matters by Abheeru and Kushad
Just Dance proudly invites you to join our 10th anniversary party
on May 23! Just Dance is an innovative dance for people who are looking
for an alternative to the club scene. Our twice a month, non-profit
event is for anyone who loves to move, play and be in an open-minded
and relaxed environment.
Many new connections are created at Just Dance and we are not, as
some have been mislead to believe, a sectarian event. With most participants
in their 30s and 40s, you will also spot kids playing and teens doing
their thing. There are dance teachers letting themselves go, office
people thankfully stretching and moving their bodies and old and new
friends connecting. Add to this, our no-smoke and no-alcohol credo
and you get a warm community feeling and a natural high. There’s
nothing else in Vancouver quite like Just Dance and we like to call
it: The Power of Positive Partying!
Maybe you haven’t been to Just Dance because you have long ago
decided that you can’t dance. At our event, you can be yourself,
whatever that looks like. Long time participant Cathy Abbott of WCB
tells us that: "before you know it, you will find yourself letting
go and letting the music dance itself through you." We have often
seen the shy and the self-proclaimed "two-left-feeters"
take their first steps, at their own pace, and soon realize that they
had a wonderful dancer inside waiting to have the good time.
"For me, dance is the art that not only gives expression to the
human soul but is also the foundation of a life that is more free,
more harmonious and more natural." says Isadora Duncan, famed
dancer and founder of modern dance. And for many at Just Dance, movement
is the doorway that leads to their Higher Self. Dance can be experienced
as a path to the now where the knowledge and the busyness of the mind
are set aside. To also support such a process, we have been offering
an optional "meditation" with music, movement and stillness
before every Just Dance (from 7:30 – 8:30pm).
Carla Rieger, corporate educator and director of Yes Education Systems
says: "Just Dance is a place where I can really dance in my own
way. There’s lots of space to move and a wholesome, fun-loving
atmosphere. I have also been introduced to a wide variety of great
new music." Indeed, Just Dance is not a one-beat-stomping affair!
We love to take you around the world and make you groove to a long
list of world music rhythms including african, latin, drumming, celtic
along with the modern pop, trance, house, and nuJazz sounds…
Joseph Roberts, publisher and senior editor of Common Ground wisely
comments that: "When we are deeply listening and dancing to world
music, we are also inviting into our lives the deep wisdom nested
in those very same cultures."
So after nearly 200 dances, we are getting ready to celebrate our
first decade and inviting you all – old-timers and new alike
– to a magical evening. There will be lots of great music including
excerpts from our tenth anniversary CD compilation. We are gathering
many door prizes, a birthday cake as well as inviting you to contribute
to our potluck finger foods. A night that will keep going as long
as your dancing shoes will keep you going!
Just Dance is also getting ready for its second decade. Starting next
September, after our summer break, each dance will be preceded by
a free class such as dancing, drumming, singing and more. Also, look
for our upcoming website, a survey, participatory activities, 50-50
draws, or join in by volunteering… Special thanks to Common
Ground, our media sponsor and to a host of volunteers who have given
their time and energy to this community event.
Sign up for our brief e-letter to be kept informed of our upcoming
events. By signing up before May 23rd, you could win prizes in our
draw on the night of our 10th anniversary. Simply email us at justdance-list@infoserve.net
with your name and the word "subscribe" and we’ll
do the rest.

Dance is 9pm-12:30am, May 23 at 2114 West 4th Avenue (Arbutus). $8
