Keep up great work
Dear Common Ground,
Thanks for including a short piece on the Working Forest in your September issue,
with a link to a longer story on your website.
Unfortunately, the WF is as pressing an issue as ever -- the Liberals are taking
the enabling legislation for the WF, Bill 46, to a vote in the fall sitting of
the BC Legislature. That means this piece of environment-trashing mischief can
begin to be set in motion. So we need to mobilize people to make a massive protest
against the entire WF policy. This is nothing less than an environmental Armageddon
waiting to happen in BC.
Thanks and keep up the great work on the magazine!

Parade of Lost Souls
October 25
Public Dreams needs your support
Each year as Halloween draws near thousands of people meet in Grandview Park,
to honor the dead, wake the living and face their fears. The Parade of Lost Souls
weaves its way through the Commercial Drive neighborhood - blending the Mexican
"Day of the Dead" celebration with a mix of street theatre, giant puppets, art
installations, live music and pyrotechnics. The Parade is led by our orchestra
and culminates in a grand spectacle of fire. Throughout the Parade route are a
number of strategically placed shrines.
These shrines were inspired by the traditions of other cultures that celebrate
the lives of those that have died. Teachers in local neighborhood schools informed
the students about the history and meaning of this event. The youth then interpreted
this theme into shrines that were meaningful to them. Last year over 17 shrines
were created and over 100 students were involved. Come out on October 25th, at
6:30 p.m. and experience for yourself the wonder and mystery of The Parade of
Lost Souls.
Donations to support this event can be made to Public Dreams Society. 604.879.8611
More fruit trees needed
Dear Common Ground,
We at the Vancouver Fruit Tree Project need your readers' help! We
are a community-based project with a simple idea: to connect people who have excess
fruit on backyard trees with those who have the time and energy to harvest it.
Fruit is shared between tree owners, volunteers and community organizations. Our
volunteer teams pick 4,000 lbs. annually of apples, pears and plums in the Vancouver
area, but we need more trees!
Readers who would like to register their fruit trees, volunteer to pick, or share
their pruning expertise are welcome to call us on our hotline at 604-873-1191,
email us at @vcn.bc.ca (add "fruit" to beginning) or visit our website
at www.vcn.bc.ca/fruit.
Your sincerely,
Heather Millar,
Project Coordinator,
The Fruit Tree Project
